Utah Girls' State Program

The Utah Girls' State program is offered to approximately 300 Utah high school girls, who have just completed their junior year. The selection process is handled by the members of the American Legion Auxiliary and after the girls are selected they are treated to an intensive week of study working together as self-governing citizens on the campus of Southern Utah University. The program is so well respected that the University offers the graduates 3 hours of Elective Course Workshop credit in addition to granting numerous scholarships worth tens of thousands of dollars.

The 2012 Utah Girls' State session will be held June 4-9, 2012.

Registration & Administrative Fee: $350
Transportation fee (if applicable): $75

Westlake's "Homeless for a Night"

Westlake's seniors and juniors have been invited to spend a night at Westlake High School to  learn about Homeless situations, by being "Homeless for a Night".

The community is being invited to join the event as Chaperones from Friday night beginning at 11:00 pm to 4:30am Saturday morning. Some volunteers will also have the opportunity to serve food to the students in their rendition of a "Soup Kitchen".

This event is being coordinated by Jen Miller from Westlake's Media Center. If you need further information about this event, or want to sign up to be a chaperone, please contact Jen at Westlake 801 610-8815 or email her (jjmiller@alpinedistrict.org).

All information gathered through VolunteerSpot for this activity is being forwarded to Jen for the scheduling of volunteers.

Thanks so much for supporting this overnight, late, early, strange hour event!! The students should have lots of fun and learn some valuable information via this experience.

Thanks for all you do for the community and school!!  Have a wonderful holiday season!!

.

Westlake's Multi Cultural Day

College Presenters from all over are coming to introduce their programs to our students and their families.

If you are interested in helping to set up or put away the many tables that will be used, please visit the link below at VolunteerSpot to sign up. We appreciate your help!

Some of these tables will also be used for the Homeless for a Night (Dec 9th) that the Juniors and Seniors have been invited to experience at the High School.

So this volunteer opportunity is a double duty event, can't beat that!!

Please be sure to sign up and contribute a little of your time to Westlake High, our community and especially our Students! All information gathered via VolunteerSpot will be forwarded to Ingrid Andromidas who is coordinating this event. She can be reached via Westlake's phone at 801 610-8815 or her email at (iandromidas@alpinedistrict.org) if you need more information.

Thanks for everything you do for Westlake. Many opportunities would not be possible, if not for the generosity of our volunteers!!

Thanks !!

SEP Dinner Sept 21, 2011

Food Glorious Food!!

Thanks to our awesome Food Donators!! and the volunteers who took time to help set up and maintain the food during the SEP Dinner.

We had great helpers and the teachers/administrators enjoyed the meal. Food from chips to cookies, salad dressings, salads and more salads were donated. The meal rounded out with huge submarine sandwiches that needed to be cut to individual portions.

Everything went smoothly and we appreciate the willingness from our volunteers to donate time and food for this volunteer activity.

THANKS SO MUCH FOR YOUR GENEROSITY!!

Parent/Teacher Conference Sept 21

Thanks to the many parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, guardians that came to the first Westlake Parent/Teacher Conference of the 2011-12 calender year. It was wonderful to see the support and concern that you have for your children.

I hope for those of us who were unable to come or did not get to see all the teachers, that we will take a moment to make an appointment with the teachers, or have them call us and talk with them over the phone, or email them so that we will know and understand where our children stand in each of their classes.

Volunteer News:

It was a very busy three and a half hours at the Volunteer tables inside the main entrance. Parent/Teacher conference found many of our wonderful parents coming to the school to meet and discuss the progress of their students.

We had three tables and four piles of Progress Reports to hand out. The counseling center printed some 2374 reports and we as volunteers cheerfully dug into our respective piles of close to 575 sheets to find the reports for our awesome parents. Believe me, this was a challenge! But it was also fun.

I was there for the whole time and was able to work with nine other wonderful volunteers who stayed for an hour or hour in a half to help. I had a great time with them- they were awesome!! I also enjoyed seeing so many people from our community that I haven't seen for a very long time. The only thing that would have made the afternoon better would have been having more help so that I could have broken away to visit with my own children's teachers. More hands would have made it easier for the other volunteers to see the teachers they needed to see as well. With even more hands, we could have dropped the volunteer times to 30 minutes each and that would have been awesome!!

**So if anyone out there feels that they could donate 30 minutes of their time for such an activity as this, please sign up on the VolunteerSpot master list (above right) and we will let you know when our next activities are. Then you can see if you have 30 minutes or an hour or whatever you could do to help us. Thanks!!

Thanks again to all the wonderful volunteers that helped hand out Student Progress Reports, greet the parents and direct them to the conference.

YOU ARE AWESOME!!

Picture Days August 30 & 31, 2011

Picture Day  - - -  2011-2011 School Year

Many thanks for the wonderful parent and family volunteers that helped during the two all day School Picture days. Many of our volunteers stayed for much longer than the 2 hour blocks that were scheduled on Tuesday and Wednesday. Some stayed all day on Wednesday and helped immensely.

The Life Touch workers were impressed by the number of volunteers who skillfully took over various areas of the pre-photo preparation process allowing the photographers to quickly and quite efficiently move our students through the photography process.

Nearly 2000 school pictures, including special Senior Photos for the yearbook were processed during the 2 days, consisting of seven hours each. Many of our Seniors had previously had their yearbook photos processed during the summer and they only needed to pick up their Student ID Cards.

It was amazing to see the excitement of our students when then had their photo taken and a few minutes later they received their Photo School ID Cards! The ID card printers did have problems during periods 1 and 2 of the first day and those students had to pick up their cards at later during the day. All of the cards that were left will be distributed in the affected 1st and 2nd B-day English classes on Thursday Sept 1st.

The students that came through the auditorium for their photo's were a joy to work with. Most every student was courteous, friendly, obedient and helpful, needless to say the students made the volunteer hours fun and exciting. We have a wonderful student body this year, full of fun and interesting kids.

We so appreciate the English Teachers for preparing the students in the classrooms prior to entering the auditorium. Their handling of the 'tickets' allowed the volunteers to render service in other areas to the photography people. Thank you so much teachers. It was fun to meet you and see you interact with your students and the volunteers. You are a great asset to our community, our teens and our school.

Kudoo's again to all of our awesome volunteers. It was a pleasure to work with you and share in your talents. Thanks for making the dreaded school picture day fun and efficient. We look forward to sharing more volunteer opportunities with you and others of the community that will join us in future events. We appreciate the time sacrifices you made so that you were able to assist your children and their friends during the last two days.

First Day of School, August 23rd, 2011

The first day of school started out with wonderful volunteers serving the student body at Westlake High!

As the students entered Westlake High before 7:45 am, Tues August 23rd, 2011, they were greeted by a half dozen tables backed with smiling volunteers. Some students had not received their schedules before the first day and others were just happy to have another copy.

With schedule in hand the students were prepared to navigate the schools halls and find their assigned classrooms. The commons area became a bustling, buzzing hive full of teen energy as the moments ticked closer to the first bell. The noise level continued to grow until the volunteers found themselves resorting to lip reading to learn the student's name who was requesting a class schedule.

Needless to say, the morning was exciting with lots of high fives, squealing, hugs and plenty of smiles. Even if your student left the house in a non-excited state, the excitement was so abundant that every student must have felt excited for the new year. It was fun to observe friends seeing friends that they hadn't seen since school let out in the spring.

Thanks to the multiple volunteers that spent an hour or so in the commons area helping the students and staff kick off the new year. Our volunteers are such wonderful selfless people and our community is grateful for your service.

Westlake High is off to a wonderful start. We have a school full of awesome students, teachers, staff and administration. Westlake High is a great educational resource for the teen students in our community.  Goooooooooo Thunder!!!!
